Allergy safe eating can get expensive! Check out these tips to save money on groceries.
Tip 1: Consider investing in a chest freezer. This is a bigger cost up front, but when you have the ability to buy in bulk and freeze, you can save a lot of money!
Tip 2: Get in the habit of looking at your local grocery store mailers before shopping, and only purchase organic meat and produce that is on sale. Again, this is a great opportunity to stock up and freeze! You may not buy chicken for one week, but when it's on sale next week you will buy 6 packages and have it as part of your regular rotation.
Tip 3: Only buy produce in season, since produce tends to be cheaper. Check out this seasonal food guide.
Tip 4: Consider using an online service like Misfits Market that sends you random produce that is marked down 40% and almost always organic!
Tip 5: Take advantage of Vitacost.com discount codes and sales of staple items. You can purchase many clean food items through the Hub under the tab "What Do I Eat Now" > recommended products.
Tip 6: Consider eating fewer meals with meat, and relying more on meals where the main focus is on cheaper plant-based proteins like quinoa, buckwheat, beans or legumes (for example, black bean tacos instead of meat tacos to save money).
Tip 7: Shop first thing in the morning when grocery stores, like Kroger or Sprouts, often mark down items that are soon expiring. You can get some great deals this way (again stock up!)
Tip 8: Avoid purchasing too many foods in the “allergy-friendly” category that are often marked up higher. “Dairy free” products are much more expensive than just picking an alternative food.
Tip 9: Use coconut oil for baking instead of expensive dairy-free “butter.” You can purchase refined if you don’t want the slight coconut oil taste. You can adapt the coconut oil to whatever consistency the recipe calls for (firm, soft or melted!)
Tip 10: Consider using a budgeting app like YNAB which is a great way to keep track of monthly expenses!
