Spring Cleaning Hacks to Clear Environmental Allergens

How do you clean with a needy baby? These easy cleaning hacks and products will help you keep the spring allergens out of your home!

Tip 1: A simple step - remove shoes before coming into the house since that can bring lots of grime, allergens and even toxins into your house! (especially if your little one is crawling!) Click here to read more.

Tip 2: Consider investing in an air purifier! These can significantly reduce allergens and dust in your home. Click here for some suggestions.

Tip 3: One of the places that collect the most dust are ceiling fan blades! Have you heard of the pillow-case hack? This works super well and is very easy to do. Take 30 minutes and go around your entire house wiping down the fan blades. Click here to learn how.

Tip 4: When was the last time your home air filter was changed? This takes less than 5 minutes to do, but we often forget! The general rule of thumb is the following: ordinary home without pets; every 90 days. One dog or cat; every 60 days. More than one pet or if anyone has allergies; 20–45 days. Set a calendar reminder on your phone!

Tip 5: Baseboards collect a lot of dust and allergens but they are such a pain to clean and can take time that a busy mama doesn’t have! Consider investing in a specialized tool like this to make the job much easier! If your baseboards are in desperate need of some deep cleaning, consider hiring someone specifically to just clean the baseboards in your home so that you can get a fresh start and have less ongoing maintenance! .

Tip 6: Have you jumped on the robotic vacuum trend yet? If not, this is SUCH a lifesaver for moms and the cost has gone down significantly over the last few years. Especially if you have pets, this can be a game changer. After lots of research, our family settled on this simple robotic vacuum. It does require blocking off certain rooms since it cannot be programmed. We love our “Robie” which has worked great for 1.5 years and has easy replacement parts.

Tip 7: Instead of getting overwhelmed by all that needs to be cleaned in your home, pick one small space per day, or two or three spaces per week. For example, your laundry room, bedroom, and 1 bathroom on week 1, then kitchen, baby’s room and guest bathroom on week 2, and so on.

Tip 8: Rotate using different bathrooms in your home throughout the day and wipe down each one as you use them!

Tip 9: Minimize the amount of mats and rugs in your home that require more cleaning and collect dirt. Those with allergy issues can benefit from less fabric surfaces which collect dust mites and even mold.

Tip 10: HIRE OUT! There is NO shame in being too busy or overwhelmed to clean your home. Often as moms we feel like we should be able to “do it all.” Hiring a house cleaner is often one of the best things you can do for your mental sanity and allows you space for other important things. Maybe you just need a deep cleaning every so often—either way—if you are able, utilize someone else to do a good deep clean! You are supporting others this way too!
